Programs

One mission. Four ways in.

Each program meets a different audience and schedule, but every path begins with narrative ownership and moves toward real production, completed work, public visibility, and the next opportunity.

01 / Program models

Programming built around how young people learn and create.

0110-month school program

Home Movies

Our full school-year model begins with narrative ownership. Students study propaganda, persuasion, social media, signs, symbols, editing, repetition, and identity before writing and producing original films.

  • Media + social literacy
  • Screenwriting
  • Department training
  • Completed student work
02Condensed summer program

Summer Film Club

The intensive version of Home Movies. Students rotate through writing, directing, cinematography, sound, and production while learning how stories shape perception and completing original work together.

  • Summer intensive
  • Hands-on crew roles
  • Narrative literacy
  • Original films
03Michigan Central program

Student Shorts

Students build their own short films and learn professional crew roles while helping create a screening platform that can also welcome short work submitted by community filmmakers.

  • Student-made shorts
  • Community submissions
  • Crew training
  • Public screenings
04Intergenerational story program

Our Family Tree

Families sit with their elders to trace lineage, memory, and local history. DFC students and crew travel to them, film the conversation, and preserve the story as a family-centered episode.

  • Family submissions
  • Elder interviews
  • Lineage on film
  • Youth field crews
